The Human Rights Commission workshops aim to assist individuals working in various environments to gain a better understanding of;
- Discrimination Act 1991
- Health Privacy Act 1997 and
- Human Rights Act 2004.
Employers are often held liable for unlawful discrimination in the workplace. Harassment and bullying can also lead to significant financial costs to organisations through increased sick leave, stress leave, workers compensation claims and lost productivity. Across a range of areas, inappropriate conduct in public can lead to complaints, customer dissatisfaction and legal action.
Discrimination
Four of our six workshops concentrate on different aspects of discrimination law. These workshops assist to:
• incorporate these laws into organisational policies & procedures.
• promote a legally compliant and non-discriminatory workplace.
• create awareness and an understanding of how to improve the rights and wellbeing of others.
Human Rights
The Australian Capital Territory was the first jurisdiction in Australia to enact a Human Rights Act. Our Human Rights Workshop provides an introductory overview of the ACT Human Rights Act, the history of human rights nationally and internationally, and the recent amendments placing new obligations on public authorities.
Health Services and Privacy
The ACT is one of only two Australian jurisdictions that has its own specific legislation relating to to the privacy of, and access to, health records. Providers have responsibilities to protect personal health information that they hold, and to only give access to that information in certain circumstances. Consumers have a general right to access information that relates to them. Our workshop is a useful guide for both providers and consumers, which will give participants an understanding of rights and responsibilities relating to personal health information.
